The week ahead/upcoming events
Tuesday, October 12th is our school wide field trip to the Tsútswecw Provincial Park, for the Salute to the Sockeye. Please visit https://www.salmonsociety.com/salute-to-the-sockeye/event-details/ for more information.
**We ask that all students come with their Salmon Arm West Orange shirt**
October 13th is our individual Student Photo Day. Each class will be called down to the gym, where students will have an individual photo taken by a photographer from Mountain West Studios. On October 13h, your child will come home with a QR Code card, which will give you access to view and order photos online. The photos will take a few days to be ready – we will contact families once they are uploaded and available for purchase. On the Photo Day, please ensure your child does not wear green, as this colour conflicts with the green screen background.
October 21st is a Provincial Professional Development Day. Teachers across the province will be participating in various Professional Development conferences and workshops. Classes will not be in session on this day.
October 26th is School District No. 83’s Student/Family/Teacher Conference Day. **Please note: classes will not be in session on Wednesday, October 26th** as all elementary and middle schools will be participating in conferences on this day, with a similar format to what has been done in the past. There are a couple of notable changes this year, we’d like families to be aware of. Conferences are now the first informal communication about student learning/progress. This means the conference acts as an interim report to provide families with an update on how the child is doing, with a specific focus on developing an action plan for a student-centered goal. With conferences being an informal communication of student learning, the students will now receive a formal written report card in late November. In the past, the students have been dismissed at Lunch, with conferences taking place in the afternoon. This year, conferences will take place all day. Students will attend the conference, with their family member(s). Additional information will be provided to families soon, including a link to sign-up for Student/Family/Teacher Conferences.
October 31st is Halloween. Students and staff members are invited to wear costumes to school on Monday, October 31st. A few reminders:
- Please ensure costumes are respectful of various races and cultures;
- Replica weapons (sword, dagger, gun, etc.) should be left at home and saved for Halloween night;
- Masks should be left at home and saved for Halloween night;
- Costumes should follow the school’s dress code in order to be respectful to self and others.
In this current day and age, we have to be very careful with students bringing replica weapons to school or wearing masks at school. There is a lot of sensitivity (for a variety of reasons) to these types of items and we need to be respectful to all members of our school community, while still providing a fun opportunity for students to celebrate the day in their Halloween costumes. Thank you for your understanding.
Thank you and we hope all of our families have an excellent week ahead!
